Mountaineer Volunteer Program (MVP)
Overview
Appalachian's Mountaineer Volunteer Program is a partnership of the Office of Admissions and the Office of Alumni Affairs & Annual Giving. This program connects Appalachian State University alumni with current or prospective Appalachian students, through phone calls, high school visits, college fairs and on-campus events. Any graduate of Appalachian State is welcome to volunteer for the program.
Volunteers have the option of serving in six different programs:
- Admitted Student Calls- This program connects alumni volunteers with students in North Carolina who have recently been accepted to Appalachian State University. These students may have already commited to attending Appalachian, or they may still be considering other schools.
Volunteers are responsible for reaching out to five students via phone and reporting back to the Office of Admissions, using the forms provided. Volunteers answer questions from the prospective student and their family about life on campus, Boone and the surrounding ares, and direct students to staff resources for questions related to the admissions process.
- Freshmen Move-In – Volunteers help Freshmen move into their residence halls on Friday, August 17th. Shifts are offered in 2-hour increments throughout the day, and volunteers can serve as movers or greeters. (Separate registration required for the event).
- College Fairs- Alumni volunteers are invited to participate in prospective student college fairs outside of North Carolina, in locations near their residence, as an important extension of Admissions' outreach at out-of-state college fairs. Volunteers will represent the Office of Admissions, and will be provided with all the materials and training needed to make their visit a success. They will speak with interested students and their families about the benefits of attending Appalachian. Fairs will be predominately limited to fall, with selective spring opportunities.
- High School Representative- Alumni visit high school guidance offices or career centers within their respective county or town once a year to provide them with updated information from the Admissions Office. These materials will provide contact information for both the volunteer and Appalachian's Office of Admissions, in case high school students or guidance counselors have questions related to Appalachian, its culture and points of pride, or admissions processes.
- Local Senior Sendoffs- Alumni Chapters host sendoffs for incoming freshmen and their families the summer prior to their arrival at Appalachian. Alumni volunteers offer to “adopt” a new Appalachian Family, covering the cost of their meal at the sendoff and making sure they feel welcome at the event.
- Senior Seminar – Groups of Appalachian seniors (approx. 50-100 students) are invited to the McKinney Alumni Center for seminars providing practical advice on real-world topics: purchasing a house or car, planning a wedding, investing for retirement, choosing benefits, etc. Alumni who are subject matter experts in relevant fields volunteer their time for a 2-hour course, including a Question and Answer Session.
